Scrap a car in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland a scrapped car must go to an ATF, a site authorised to treat end-of-life vehicles, because nidirect says they are hazardous waste until fully treated and de-polluted. The ATF must give the last owner a certificate of destruction. Do not hand a scrap car to an unlicensed site.

ELV / Scrap a car in Northern Ireland

What nidirect says

"End of life vehicles are classed as hazardous waste until they have been fully treated and de-polluted."

"ATFs must give a certificate of destruction to the last owner."

The Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) publishes a list of every ATF in Northern Ireland, called the ATF Public Register. Check a site is on it before you hand a car over.

Telling DVLA, and your tax

The nidirect page does not cover telling DVLA. It lists DVLA, Swansea, as the contact for car tax, vehicle registration and SORN queries.

Gov.uk's guide to scrapping a vehicle says to give the ATF your log book (V5C), keep the yellow section, and tell DVLA you have taken the vehicle to an ATF, and that you can be fined if you do not. It also says DVLA refunds any full months of vehicle tax left. That guide does not say whether anything differs in Northern Ireland, so check with DVLA if you are unsure.

Where ELV fits

The buyer arranges the paperwork, including the Certificate of Destruction where the car is scrapped.

ELV passes your car details to a vehicle buyer. We do not buy cars or take payment.

The postcode box on the form accepts Northern Ireland postcodes. It tells you straight away if there is no buyer for yours yet.
